5 Simple Tips to clean out your Closet

While some people clean their closet every season, doing a revamp at the mid-way mark of the year is pretty important.

Freeing up your closet really helps you determine what you already have and ensure you wear the pieces you even forgot about. And more importantly, you finally ditch the garments and accessories that no longer serve their purpose.

Here are 5 easy ways to clean out your closet.

1. WORK IN SECTIONS

Break your closet into manageable chunks and focus on one section at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed and give up. Go through shoes one day, then shirts another day and work your way through in increments. Last week I went through my workout clothes and pajamas, and in less than an hour I was able to high-five myself for starting and finishing a project that leaves at least part of my wardrobe much cleaner. This summer I did the same with just summer clothes. What a relief it was to give myself permission to ignore the rest of my closet and just focus on one part.

2. EDIT TO THE ESSENTIALS

Most of us don’t need eight pairs of jeans. Or 10 cardigans. Or three pairs of black flats. Choose one or two of your favorites (you know, the ones you wear first when they come out of the laundry) and let go of the rest. With it you’ll let go of the clutter and the guilt of not faithfully wearing all the duplicates.

3. MIND THE 2 FS AND THE 2 CS

Don’t keep anything you don’t feel confident and happy wearing. You should ask yourself the following questions about each piece: Does it fit well? Is it flattering? Is it comfortable? Is it in good condition? When your closet only contains items that let you answer yes to those questions, getting dressed is much easier.

4. TRY IT ON

To truly evaluate the clothes you’ve kept, you really should try on each piece. This takes a little bit of time, but it will pay off in the long run.

5. SORT IT OUT

Sort your items into the following piles: Keep, trash, donate or sell (these should be in decent condition), take a break (if you’re on the fence about it, pack it away for a while and see if you miss it), unseasonable (see ya next year, sundresses, shorts and summer colors). It’s refreshing to open a closet that contains only the items you intend to wear this month, so try to move out anything irrelevant.
