Clean Bedroom Tips

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary — the one tidy, clean, and serene place you can go to feel relaxed. Piles of laundry, overstuffed closets, and a layer of dust won’t contribute to your peace of mind. What’s more, making a clean bedroom a priority can help you avoid dust mites, a major cause of year-round allergies. While these microscopic creatures live in warm, dark places, such as pillows and mattresses, routine-cleaning measures can help minimize their presence. The more effort you put into cleaning your bedroom, the better you’ll sleep.

The Time You Spend on Your Mattress

We average eight hours of sleep per day. That’s one-third of your life that you spend on your mattress. Then what about those hours in which you’re relaxing, watching TV at night or on a nice, cool, rainy Saturday morning?
You spend more time on your mattress than anywhere else in the world. Make sure that it’s clean and healthy. Wake up tomorrow feeling refreshed and revived.

Keep Bedding Clean

Take 30 seconds to make your bed every morning. The nicer it looks, the more effort you’ll make to keep the bedroom clean from day today. On a weekly basis, help reduce allergens and keep bed linens fresh by washing sheets and pillowcases in hot water with a detergent. It’s also a good idea to air your mattress for at least a few hours (and rotate it and flip it at least once a month to prevent sagging) before putting on the freshly washed sheets.

Wash your dust ruffle and mattress pad at least once a month. Freshen up duvets and blankets too large for the washer by hanging them on a clothesline, or popping them in the dryer with a dryer sheet. If you suffer from allergies, consider investing in a mite-proof mattress, duvet, and pillow casings, too. These are available in drug and department stores.

Dust Your Bedroom Regularly

Wipe down furniture, ceiling fans, ceiling corners, artwork, trim work and air vents. For lamps, consider using a blow dryer to avoid rubbing dust into the shade. Wash window treatments and drapes according to directions. If you have blinds, wipe them thoroughly with a damp paper towel or use a duster.

Give the headboard a good dusting, too. If it is upholstered, use the upholstery cleaning attachment on your vacuum. While the vaccum is on, give the room a thorough go around, and don’t forget under the bed, a place where fur balls and dust bunnies tend to collect.

Freshen Up Your Space

Try a citrus-scented product in your bedroom; one study from Radboud University in the Netherlands found that exposure to citrus scents led participants to maintain a cleaner environment. Luminaries are a great choice for the bedroom because you don’t have to worry about falling asleep with a lit candle. Another trick for keeping your room smelling fresh and clean is to pop a dryer sheet over the warm air vent in your closet (it works like a charm).

Hang up clean clothes as soon as possible each day, or they’ll end up wrinkled and hard to find. On a long-term basis, remember that less is more. The fewer possessions you have, the easier it is to clean.

She packs away seasonal clothes to keep her closet more organized. Go through your wardrobe and sort clothes into piles you wish to keep, store somewhere else or donate. Organize your keepers by color or style, so you can dress easily in the morning (when you’re in a rush, bad choices tend to end up on the floor!).

How to Clean Mattress Stains

Make a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap to remove mattress stains: Fill a bowl with two cups of hydrogen peroxide and one tablespoon of dish soap. Mix well. Use a clean sponge to apply this mixture to your mattress stains. Allow the mixture to work for a few minutes, and then blot or rub the stains with a damp rag.

How to Remove Odors from a Mattress

To eliminate any stale odors, sprinkle the mattress with baking soda. Let the baking soda sit on the mattress for several hours before removing it with a vacuum. Always check the forecast before bringing your mattress outside! Have a friend help you move the mattress outside; fresh air and sunshine will help get rid of any smells. UV light kills bacteria, so lay your mattress out on each side for up to an hour. While you’re out there, give the mattress several good whacks to dislodge dust particles.

Once your bedroom is cleaned thoroughly, it’s easy to keep things organized until the next time you’re ready to do a major clean. Just remember, at the end of a long day, there’s nothing better than retreating to a tidy and welcoming bedroom.
